All strategic plans for non profit organizations are based on the primary three elements: mission statement, vision, and values. These are the foundations for all decisions and plans.

Mission: The guiding light or the reason your non profit organization exists. It is never fulfilled. It currently exists and can be found in your articles of incorporation. The mission can be short so everyone in the organization can incorporate it into their daily dialogues. It should be inclusive to cover everything the organization is doing.

Vision: The future you want to create is the vision. It is not a prediction of the future. Think of it as a checklist of what you want to accomplish within the next 10 years. The vision is created. If there is anything your organization is doing that does not contribute to your vision, you should not be doing it.

Values: A guide to help you decide the correctness of your decisions. Values exist within every organization. When the leadership discovers their set of values all other decisions become easier and quicker. If they are not uncovered, the group will struggle with each decision trying to determine if it is the correct one.

What the strategic plan looks like beyond this point of the three essentials depends on the personality of the non profit organization and the imposed outside requirements. There's no best model for a non profit strategic plan. There is a best strategic plan for each non-profit organization which is based on their own requirements and culture.
